First let me say, there is NOTHING wrong with formula feeding, I have 3 extremely healthy children who have all started their life with formula due to reasons beyond my control. None have allergies, none have asthma, none are obese etc. If formula feeding is the way it works out for you and bubs then do yourself a favour and ditch the mother guilt, it’s not a big deal, I promise!
Here’s what I have learnt about making baby bottles, it can be a pain in the butt! Yep, I am just going to put that out there. If you have a bun in the oven, try and get your dairy farm on when that little nugget pops out because making formula and washing bottles everyday is no fun.
That said, here’s how I have managed to keep the bottle factory running. Make a dedicated bottle bowl, just an old salad bowl will do. Make it’s home next to the sink, so when ever anyone feeds bug-a-lugs the bottle is rinsed out and put in the bowl to be washed properly later. Once you are down to one or two bottles it’s time to make another set, I’d always make up to 8 so I never ran out. With formula some people say they are all the same, I say buy the best one you can afford. The crap is expensive you will be looking at an average of $20+ a week, don’t add it up it just makes you more upset!
Get in to a bottle making routine, the same time everyday put the kettle on, wash the bottles, sterilize the bottles, then pour in the cooling boiled water. Last step when the water is cool enough in goes the formula and in to the fridge. Same routine everyday, never forget as you don’t want to run out of bottles at 4am. Put the bottles in a basket in the fridge at the back where it is coldest.
If you are going out, you can take a bottle of just boiled water, then put the formula in when you need it. There are many different methods of making up bottles, the important part is to get in to a good routine and everyone who makes them needs to know your system. The good news is when bug-a-lugs is 6 months old it’s important to stop sterilizing the bottles, then at 12 months you are good to move on to full cream cows milk. Then the sooner you switch to a sippy cup the better it is for their little teeth and you don’t end up with a toddler who will only settle with a bottle in their mouth.
This is just for pregnant or formula feeding mummas, what ever works out for you and your little muffin is the right way for you. Don’t waste one moment feeling bad, in this day and age the formulas are amazing we are very lucky to have a plan B! It will all be fine, your baby will grow up healthy just like the breastfeed kids I am sure of this. You might also like Make Room For Baby.
