Post pregnancy is such a unique time in your life, you have just spent 9 months waiting for the event, the event has happened, you now have the baby you dreamt of yet you are tired, sore, fat and keep crying all the time.
My biggest tip is take each day at a time and let your body heal it’s beautiful self. Your body has just preformed the biggest miracle it is capable of so give it a break and give yourself some credit. Be sensible over the first few weeks and do not be too hard on yourself because you are full of hormones and are very sleep deprived.
The first week is a bit of a shock and a blur and may all play out in the hospital. It will be a novelty and you will more than likely have lots of visitors all wanting to see the new bub, who haven’t been up since 3am with the now sleeping little nugget. Then when you do come home, the flowers curl up and the visitors dry up and the reality sets in. It can be truly overwhelming, it feels like this for all of us so don’t ever feel alone. I can guarantee you there are 100s of other mums up walking around the lounge room at 2am with a crying nocturnal newborn having no idea what to do next, it’s just all part of you learning.
You will catch yourself looking at your new body in the reflection of a shop window or your old jeans still wont fit, you know what who cares. S*&t you just had a baby! Give yourself the 6 weeks you are entitled to to sit on the couch and heal. This is such a short period of time in your life, the dishes will be there tomorrow and the washing can wait. I was in such a hurry with number 3 to get back in to it that just being busy with 3 kids I popped some internal c-section stitches at 6 weeks and 1 day! This was my body reminding me of the need to slow down and take it easy. I recommend wearing a belly wrap have a look at this previous post Your Belly After Your Baby for what saved my belly and back after a 10lbs2oz bouncing baby boy via my third c-section.
It’s far too early to think about getting active just yet, but when you feel up to it it’s a great idea to get out every other day to a shopping centre and walk around with bubs in the pram. This gets you out of the house, gets the circulation flowing in your body which is good for healing and reminds you life goes on. What you can do while you wait for the 6 weeks to pass is clean up your diet. Really think about what you are putting in your mouth, no more eating for two now you are eating for you. Just by eating clean healthy food you can start to lose some of the baby weight. You do now have a double chin, your belly is soft and floppy and your butt feels huge, it’s not forever so don’t waste any energy stressing about it.

If you have just had a baby or are going to soon, sit down, put your feet up and stop crying because it is all going to be OK. You are doing amazing, you are doing what you are here on our earth to do, OK a bit too Hippy but you get my drift! Take care of yourself and stop stressing and enjoy this squishy newborn.

I have been very lucky that all my babes have come out with no fuss. I started back at post natal exercise classes after about 2 – 3 weeks with all of them. I found the stretching and movement was great for stress release and gave me more energy.
Those first few weeks are so special with your newborn. They grow and change so very quickly and you NEVER get it back! I always encourage friends to make sure they enjoy it and let other things go – they can wait 🙂 .
Yes that is the trick just remember to enjoy it through your tired eyes! It’s such a short time really! R
